After a final inspection, I set the specialty beverage on the bar top for her approval. An oversized mason jar showcases the tropical concoction. The different flavored layers provide a colorful presentation. In addition to the visual pleasure, thereโ€™s enough fruit on the rim to be considered an afternoon snack.

Her blue eyes sparkle in appreciation. โ€œHow pretty. Is this one of your signature drinks for Swing into Spring?โ€

โ€œNah, this is just a little something I whipped up for you.โ€

Grace clutches her palms over her chest. โ€œAww, thank you. What is it?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s call itโ€ฆโ€ I pause to think of an appropriate title. โ€œUltimate Distraction.โ€

โ€œAnd why would we choose that?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s inspired by you.โ€

She presses a fluttered hand to her forehead, pretending to swoon. โ€œAre you a closet romantic?โ€

โ€œAre you trying to flatline my dick permanently, woman?โ€ My balls threaten to shrivel at the prospect alone.

Loud laughter escapes her. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, bartender. Iโ€™d never do that to your harem. How much do I owe you?โ€

โ€œThis one is on the house. Maybe it will lift your spirits along with your skirt.โ€ I drop a cocktail straw into her drink.

โ€œThatโ€™s sweet. Mostly. But do you have a bigger one?โ€ She frowns at the stir stick like itโ€™s offensive.

I bite my knuckles with a growl. โ€œDamn, baby. Why didnโ€™t you say so sooner? I can give you a solid nine inches if youโ€™re willing to drop the serious relationship requirement for a night.โ€

โ€œOnly if youโ€™re willing to be my Prince Charming for always. Why should I be the one to sacrifice what I want?โ€ She puckers her lips in an erotic display that gets my blood pumping too hot.

I almost concede before logic smacks me. โ€œAfraid I canโ€™t agree to those terms.โ€

Her sigh attempts to convince me that sheโ€™s disappointed. โ€œThen I guess this is where we part ways.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be bleak.โ€ I grab a regular-sized straw and slide it into her glass. โ€œOur paths will cross again.โ€

Grace tosses me a wink before snagging her drink from the counter. โ€œIโ€™ll leave that up to you, soulmate.โ€

My whirlwind romance would begin once I was ready to take the plunge.

Spoiler alertโ€”every failed first date on record suggests otherwise.

Just when Iโ€™m beginning to fault my lofty standards, Garrett Foster saunters onto the scene.

The football star turned bar owner is quick to volunteer his services.

He vows to deliver the best version of Mr. Rightโ€”just to prove first impressions deserve a second glance.

Iโ€™d question these seemingly selfless intentions if Garrettโ€™s reputation didnโ€™t answer for itself.

Shameless flirting aside, itโ€™s well-known that the established bachelor doesnโ€™t plan to settle down. Ever.

He treats commitment like a bad habit he kicked in college.

That makes him a very eligible sidekick.

At least until his actions start speaking louder than words.

Almost to the suggestive tune that heโ€™s making me miss on purpose.

Or maybe Iโ€™m just falling for the guy who claims that heโ€™s not the one for meโ€ฆ

I used to believe Jacob Evans could be mine.
That was before he delivered unforgivable news rather than sweeping me off my feet.
Not that I can fault his choice.
He got the sweetest little girl out of the deal.

I took the heartbreak as a learning experience and moved on for the better.
Jake did the oppositeโ€”allowing bitterness to fill the void.
Only his daughter can pull him from the broody gloom.
Those moments are my favorite.

Not that it matters.
Jake isnโ€™t anything to me other than a reminder of what almost was.

Besides, we couldnโ€™t be more wrong for each other.
Iโ€™ve come to accept that.
But as it turns out, Jake hasnโ€™t.

EXCERPT REVEAL: Wrong for You

We’re ONE WEEK away from the release of Wrong for You.

While we wait, enjoy this snippet to get you in the mood!

I give myself two more seconds to mourn what couldโ€™ve been. The ache in my chest doesnโ€™t cease, but I donโ€™t reveal the cracks splintering through me. My heart pumps and air continues to flow into my lungs. On the grand scale of shitty situations, this bump in the road doesnโ€™t deserve mention.

My sandals grind into the ground as I spin to face him. I ignore the burn spreading from behind my breastbone. The grin I force to appear might as well be made from plastic. But Iโ€™m the picture of acceptance.

I swipe at my wet cheeks to erase the leftover evidence. โ€œYouโ€™re right. Itโ€™s for the best.โ€

Jake rocks backward. His lips part and press together to a disjointed tempo. For the first time, he seems to flounder for a response. โ€œYeah?โ€

My head bobs in agreement. โ€œIโ€™m leaving for college at the end of August. Thereโ€™s a dorm room on campus with my name on it.โ€

And I couldnโ€™t get there fast enough after this relationship demolition.

โ€œThought you were commuting?โ€

โ€œPlans change,โ€ I clip.

Something painful flickers over his features before he smothers it. Then heโ€™s the mask of indifference. โ€œRight.โ€

โ€œSo, I guess this is goodbye.โ€ My voice cracks, but I ignore the stumble.

Jake squints at me. โ€œYouโ€™re good with this?โ€

โ€œAbsolutely.โ€ I laugh, but the tone is humorless. โ€œAnd congratulations. Youโ€™re gonna be a dad.โ€

His eyes blow wide, and he drags a hand through his dark hair. โ€œShit, thatโ€™s weird to hear.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll get used to it.โ€

โ€œNot much of an alternative, huh?โ€

โ€œGood luck.โ€ My smile wobbles with the farewell.

He pauses to study me again. โ€œWhy are you acting so chill?โ€

โ€œMy pity party came to an abrupt end. You told me to knock it off, remember?โ€

A breeze stirs at that moment. He glances at the swaying branches above. I allow my gaze to follow his lead. What little brightness still exists on this day shines through the leaves. It offers us much-needed peace.

His stare is unfocused when he looks at me next, but determination squares his shoulders. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Harper.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be.โ€

โ€œButโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re starting a family. Thereโ€™s nothing sorry about that.โ€ Or thatโ€™s what Iโ€™ll trick myself to believe.

Jakeโ€™s sigh sounds heavier than the elephant crushing my chest. My throat clogs as conflict pinches his somber appearance. He fidgets, curling his fingers into white-knuckle fists. Muscles bunch and twitch beneath his shirt. It almost looks like he wants to reach out to me. But then, just as before, his features return to their stoic state.

The sight is almost too much for me to balance on this teetering farce. I gulp to trap the hiccupped sob ready to betray me.

After a single nod, Jake turns away. His retreating footsteps threaten to weaken my willpower. I want to chase him. Beg him to choose me. But that would be selfish. His path is heading in a different direction. One I canโ€™t follow.

I can only watch him leave our love behind.
